Our Story: Family Owned and Operated since 1956

Shangri-La Resort has a rich and heartfelt history—one we're proud to share every chance we get.

It all began in 1955 with Louise and D.M. Hunter, entrepreneurs from Northwest Arkansas. After selling their previous business, they began searching for a new place to invest in. They joined forces with Emile Dufek, who was specifically interested in starting a venture on Lake Ouachita. One day, they set out to view an old farm property owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, traveling down what is now known as Shangri-La Drive. When they arrived, Emile looked out at the land and declared, “I have found my Shangri-La.” And with that, the vision for our beloved resort was born.

The group successfully bid for the rights to build on the land and began developing the property. The first buildings included a small café (with just five tables), six motel rooms, and two cottages (A & B). They also constructed the original dock at the bottom of the hill. To bring these dreams to life, they hired a young Navy veteran and skilled carpenter named Austin "IG" Carr.

While working at the resort, IG was set up on a blind date with Varine Jackson—now known as Varine Carr. That one date changed the course of their lives. They were married on June 1, 1956, and shortly before the wedding, the Hunters offered IG a full-time position as Dock Manager. The newlyweds moved to the resort, where IG ran the marina, and Varine began working in the café.

Just a month later, Shangri-La Resort officially opened its doors on July 3, 1956.

Over the next few decades, the resort continued to grow. In the late 1950s, four motel rooms and two cottages were added. Expansion continued into the early 1960s with five additional motel rooms, four more cottages, and the addition of a café lobby. In 1959, a swimming pool was built, followed by the addition of a tennis court and mobile home facilities in 1961.

The final three cottages were completed in the early 1970s. During this time, Varine began learning to cook, and under the guidance of Ruby Simpson, she perfected what would become our signature pies: coconut, chocolate, and Dutch apple.

Louise and D.M. Hunter remained deeply involved in the resort's operation for many years, working alongside a dedicated team. Meanwhile, IG and Varine built a life together at Shangri-La, raising their three sons—Larry, Marcy, and Phillip—right here on the property.

When D.M. passed in 1976, IG and Varine approached Louise with an offer to purchase the resort. In 1979, ownership officially transferred to the Carr family, marking a new chapter in Shangri-La's story.

The resort continued to thrive under IG and Varine's care, becoming a beloved destination for guests who returned year after year for the hospitality, the scenery, and, of course, the homemade pie. After IG’s passing in 2004, their sons stepped in to help manage and grow the business alongside Varine.

Today, Shangri-La Resort remains proudly family owned and operated. The Carr family legacy lives on through three daughters-in-law, three granddaughters, two grandsons, one great-grandson, and two great-granddaughters—each helping to keep the spirit of Shangri-La alive for future generations.
